Taxi Driver Strike!
So I have heard rumblings that DC is moving to metered cab fares rather than the current confusing zone system. I am not entirely sure how beneficial this will be to me since I travel exclusively in one zone 90% of the time and really have no idea if this will be cheaper for me. Either way the cab drivers are hot with this idea and are planning to strike on October 31st. Of all days! Now how will all the drag queens get home that night? Rude.
In any case, I have decided that the DC Taxi Commission needs to take a lesson from NYC. What we need: Meters, Credit Card Machines (because who carries cash), lights on top of the cab that work, bitches that drive fast and Bernadette Peters telling me to buckle the fuck up.
Until then, I have no sympathy for the cab drivers in this city.

I took a cab home yesterday afternoon. I had a great conversation with the driver about many things, and he brought up the meter thing. He was fine with it. He said he really doesn't think he'll lose money on it, and since it's electronic, it's a hell of a lot easier for him to keep track of what he's doing.
I asked him if he was striking, and he said of course not, he has a baby daughter to feed. He also said that a lot of the drivers that are threatening to strike are talking out of their asses - they aren't mad about switching to meters - they are opposed to change in general. He said a lot less will strike than you expect - a lot of them are just grumbling for effect.
Yup, they don't deserve shit. Oooh, so sorry cabbies for making you pretend you live in a real city with meters!*
*I could go on further on this point, ranting about how most cabbies are not from DC anyway, so why the whole "I'm married to zones" crap is beyond me.
